About Middle School Language Arts
Language arts classes are held daily in a 50 minute period. During the course of the year the following components are covered:
READING: The EMC Masterpiece Series provides students with a collection of classic, contemporary, and multicultural selections. Through guided reading, students are helped before, during, and after their reading of each selection with step-by-step strategies to ensure the development of careful understanding.
Practice makes perfect! Independent reading is encouraged through monthly book reports. Each month brings a different genre: science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, biography, etc.
Students have an opportunity to develop public speaking skills through many of the options for sharing their books with classmates.
ENGLISH: Students continue to build on their prior knowledge of grammar, mechanics, and usage.
SPELLING and VOCABULARY: Time is devoted to learning about the power of words. Through collecting, analyzing, discussing, and appreciating words, students can use them to communicate with clarity, precision, and expression.
WRITING: Using the written word effectively is an important part of good communications skills. Through their written expression students apply grammar, mechanics, and usage learned in the English portion of the class, utilize the writing process, and develop the five characteristics (focus, content, organization, style, and conventions) significant to all pieces of writing across the curriculum.
