Middle School Math Classes
Middle School Math is broken up into four different levels: 5th grade, 6th grade, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra. Each class focuses on helping students to meet different mathematical standards while encouraging critical and logical thinking and the creation of strong connections between new and previous information. All of this is done through a variety of notes, practice problems, whiteboard work, games, and small projects. Math provides students with the tools they can use in their daily lives and futures.
The following concepts are covered in each class:
5th Grade-Throughout the year students study units that focus on the different areas of math. They deepen their understanding of whole number and decimal concepts, learn to represent data in graphs and tables, practice whole number and decimal operations, learn number theory, learn how to compute with fractions, identify and work with geometric figures, and are introduced to measurement. 5th grade math provides students with the base they need for understanding and working in higher level mathematics.
6th Grade-In 6th grade students begin to expand on concepts and ideas covered in 5th grade. They begin the year by further developing their knowledge of number sense and operations. They then focus on fraction operations and concepts. Sixth grade also gets an opportunity to cover geometry and measurement to a higher degree than they previously have. The year is finished out with an introduction to Algebra, where students actually solve Algebraic equations. Giving them a good preparation for the Pre-Algebra class set up for 7th graders.
Pre-Algebra-This class provides students with overview of the fundamental concepts used throughout Algebra. All topics are covered in a thorough but basic way as to provide the groundwork for classes to follow. In Pre-Algebra, the class focuses on applying algebra concepts to integers and rational numbers, understanding, solving, and graphing linear equations, inequalities, and functions, as well as applying algebra to geometry.
Algebra- Algebra provides students to combine and apply concepts learned in the previous year in new and challenging ways. Students review information from Pre-Algebra and then get the opportunity to take it to the next level. The year is broken into units that cover: writing and solving expressions and equations, graphing, analyzing and solving linear functions, working with polynomials and nonlinear functions, and an introduction to radical and rational functions with geometry.
