Christmas time has rolled around and in 6th grade math that means making “gingerbread” houses. After creating scale blueprints and determining area and other measurements, students built their houses according to their blueprints and decorated using various candies and icing.

This week in school we learned about epistles, and so we wrote our own letters to people we think helped us grow in our faith. We also watched “The Rock Oddessy” where they sang about the 3 types of rocks: sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic. It was very strange but it helped me remember stuff. In math we got to play name that tune for a review of LCM and GCF. We also got to set up and get ready for the Veteran’s Day program all week. The program finally came on Friday. The choir sang along with the comminuty choir and Clarion Singers. There was also a guest speaker, a slide show, a presentation of gifts to the veterans, a breakfast, and a speech by one of our 8th graders. It was long but the 8th grade speech was wonderful and choir sounded good. All in all it was a very boring week for me because we reviewed for so many tests.

This week was Red Ribbon Week. There were a lot of different activities and theme days to help us think about the consequences of drug and alcohol use. On Monday, we dressed in all red to raise awareness and added alternatives for drug use to the graffiti board in the hallway. The theme was “Life is a journey; Travel drug-free.” In religion class on Tuesday, we made kites with our names on them and a picture of someone being drug free. This gave us an idea that if we want to play sports or something like that, then we must be drug free like some of our heroes. On Wednesday, the theme was “Anything is ‘Paws-ible’ drug free.” We wore animal print shirts and filled in paw prints with the goals that are keeping us drug free. Thursday was crazy hair day and on Friday we got to wear our Halloween costumes. This is a very fun week and everyone pledges in the school.
We still did some learning this week though. In Science we are learning about crystals and rocks. In math we just took a test on multiplication and division of decimals. It wasn’t too bad. And in Social studies, we are finishing up learning about Egypt. We got to mumify oranges and it was awesome. And in Language Arts, we just finished reading a really great story.

This week in Social Studies we learned about Egypt. One of our assignments was to create a mummy tomb. We were given a box and we had to include various objects that they would have such as transportation to the afterlife, food, a pet, and canopic jars. In Science we learned about minerals, their uses, and how they are formed. We practiced mining for minerals by getting chocolate chips out of cookies using various tools. Then we got “paid” depending on how good of a job we did. We also kept busy in our other subjects by doing vocab, learning about Jesus, reviewing decimal operations, and working on the new Mac computers.

This week we had to take standardized tests every morning. I actually kind of like these because it is different from the regular schedule. We would have testing all morning and then normal classes in the afternoon. They were on math, language, spelling, science, reading, social studies, and listening. Also, on Wednesday, we had a program and a guy brought in a lot of animals that he has saved and we got to learn about them and pet them. He brought a turtle, two bunnies, two lizards, and an iguana. I didn’t know that they were so big! It was really cool. This week was also ALF (Autumn Leaf Festival), so we don’t have school on Friday.

The past two weeks have been very busy and packed full of new stuff in sixth grade. In social studies we have been learning about cavemen and the way that they lived. This included how they made shelters and other essentials. In Science we learned all about different kinds of maps. Then we were paired up for a project where we practiced our map and measuring skills by making a map of the parking lot with our own ways to fill it up. Language arts has been full of practicing transitive and intransitive verbs. They can be a little confusing because it can sometimes be hard to find a direct object. Finally, in math class, we have done some reviewing of the properties. Some common properties are associative, commutative, zero, and identity properties. They are pretty easy. We also learned about exponents. It seemed everyone liked this shortcut.
As for school activities, last Thursday we had a fun night at the school. From 6 to 7:30 we did some painting for the locker room. We put on old clothes and painted some benches with motivational phrases and two big hawks to hang up. The locker room is really going to look a lot better!

This week we have two tests! One is in science and one is in English. In Science, we are learning about the metric system and how to convert from one prefix to another. In English, we have been reviewing helping verbs and how to identify them in a sentence. I know they will be hard, so we all have to study. Luckily, IC has helped us with learning good study tips like writing it down numerous times, rewriting definitions without looking, making notecards, making practice quizzes with friends or parents, and stuff like that. I think we will all do fine.

A Brand New School Year!!!
This week was the first week of school!! We had a lot of fun!! The theme is “Jungle of Learning”. All the teachers have decorated in a jungle theme and Mrs. Gaydash gave out bubbles, a snack and a wristband that fit the theme too. It has been wild! In language arts we started learning about action verbs. They’re a lot of fun and easy I think I will do well on the quiz. In religion we made bookmarkers. We put bible verses about Jesus on them and wrote what they meant to us. I enjoyed making them!
This week was also Father Monty’s 25 anniversary! We had a special mass celebrating his ordination. Father Monty’s family and other priest were also there. It was a very nice mass! The first week of school was a lot of fun and full of excitement!!

It’s been over a month?!
So many interesting things have happened in the middle school since the last post. Here are just a few:
New clubs have started!
Some of these great clubs include Minute to Win It, K’nex, Chimes, and Strategy Board Games.
Celebrating pi day!
Algebra and Pre-algebra compared the circumference to diameter on a graph and then discovered the line of best fit was also the formula for circumference!
6th grade analyzed the frequency of the first 100 digits of pi and made “pi charts”.
5th grade measured the circumference and diamter of various round foods to estimate pi for the first time.
Can you believe someone memorized 190 digits?
Author Julie Bisi came to vist
Middle school students got to write and illustrate their own books that later, along with Julie Bisi, they read to the entire school at an assembly. They are even published on her web site.
Coin War
6th grade students held a coin war to benefit Charitable Deeds. After collecting for only a week, the whole school helped them raise $700! The winning class, 5th grade, got to celebrate with an ice cream party.
Spelling Bee
Three representative each from grades 4-6 participated in a school spelling bee. The top prize went to a sixth grader who will get to go to Erie to compete in a diocesan competition!

Religion Competition
Sixth grade students also got the opportunity to participate in the regional level of the diocesan “To know and to serve” religion competition. Since they had completed their service project, a successful coin war, they were able to test their knowledge of the religion curriculum against a few other schools. After a wonderful performance, they placed second and proved how much they know!

This week in science we are starting our science fair experiments. Each of us pick a project to experiment on and research and test it. Then, we make a poster and present it. It is very interesting to find out about different things that you usually wouldn’t think to research. I am doing “Why do we yawn?”.
On February 28 and March1, we celebrated World Math Day which is two days where we get to do our basic facts against people from around the world. You can do up to 100 problems in each level, earning points for correct answers in division, multiplication, addition, subtraction and other things.
On Tuesday, K-8th grade went to the plantarium show at Clarion University. We got to see what the winter night sky looks like and some popular constellations. We also got to look at pictures of the moon, stars and more!
